Take a Hike

Father's Day Pick

Frank Werny was born in Germany, has lived on the east and west coasts of the United States, including as far offshore as Hawaii-- earning his PhD in the middle of it all before launching a career as a chemist for some of the most recognizable corporations in the world. Yet, his life journey didn't fully unfold until he landed in Plymouth's Pinehills six years ago. Frank and his wife Dorothy may have retired, but they certainly didn't sit still. The results of which can be found in Werny's new book,  Great Walks Among the Pines and Ponds of Plymouth and Surrounding Areas -hot off the presses!

The book highlights 50 hiking trails in and around the South Shore and Cape Cod area, including directions, level of difficulty, and a complete description of the hike.

The South Shore is an interesting place, indeed. "I've always been curious about my surroundings, but most areas are not accessible," Werny said in an interview with South Shore Woman. "Here, there is a lot of conservation area." And, he just couldn't help but take a look.

Woods, bogs, beaches, and ponds, he's explored it all. And, his experience is now captured in a book that serves as a guide for others looking for a little adventure without having to jet off to a faraway place.

Each hike is about three-to-four miles long (sometimes more), and includes a Google map with the hiking path overlaid, as well as pictures, and an approximate GPS address for finding the starting point. In addition, many of the entries include historical or descriptive backgrounds of the hike.

But even with nature and history inspiring the trek, the best part about hiking, said Werny-who has over 100 people in his hiking group-is not just exploring new places, but also meeting new people.

So, we say...Go take a hike!!!
