Our Cover Guy: The South Shore Explorer
Scott Stunzenas eats, plays, and loves the South Shore. And he wants you to share in this experience!
Scott Stunzenas has rubbed elbows with powerful politicians, promoted professional athletes, and traveled through Europe on a quest to experience new cultures. Yet, despite his wanderlust, he calls the South Shore home. And, he’s baaaaaaack!
Now, Scott, who balances bartending and real estate careers, has launched a Facebook group called The South Shore Experience, an online community where he shares his journey to find the havens and hideaways that are the secret gems of this place he—and we--- call home.
From shark fishing off of Cape Cod to hunting for the best burger this side of Boston, Scott photographs and records his findings as a reminder that we live in one of the best places in the world.
For Scott, who is on a mission to become the South Shore ‘expert’, the Facebook page is a way to engage the community with a glimpse into our very special environment.
As a bartender (you can currently finding him slinging drinks at the Waterfront Bar & Grill in Plymouth but he's probably most recognizable from his days behind the bar at Mount Blue in Norwell) he is talking, solving relationship problems, and hearing about his clients cool new adventures. As a realtor at Century 21 Abigail Adams Agency, he is helping people find their dream home. And the South Shore Experience is just another way Scott gives back.
“I have a passion for helping people,” he says.
A Marshfield native, he attended American University in Washington, D.C., graduating with a degree in the interdisciplinary study of communications, legal institutions, economics, and government. A diverse program that Scott dubs “jack of all trades, master of none.” Still, it landed him a job as an intern on Capital Hill for Congressman John Kasich, who is now the Governor of Ohio, as well as an internship for the professional soccer team D.C. United.
Upon graduation Scott began working for the National Football League in Europe. “It was an incredible experience,” he says, “working for the NFL and having the ability to travel the continent and experience different cultures and cities.”
He fell in love with London, Scott recalls, and may have stayed, but came back to the South Shore to take care of his ailing father, who had suffered a heart attack, and to support his mom. While home he got a job as a marketing manager at a database research firm that worked closely with athletic and entertainment companies, leading him to his next position as Director of Advertising and Sponsorship Sales at the DCU Center (The Centrum) in Worcester. Shortly thereafter, he moved back to DC and started working for CBS selling radio advertisements. Then he took a job at a commercial real estate research firm.
Scott has amassed a whole lot of experiences and memories over the years. But perhaps the one that stands out the most is the image of DC pre- and post 9/11. After that horrific day, Scott noticed a secret service car parked outside of his house. It was then that he learned his neighbor was the Deputy Secretary of State-- the person the secret service were there to protect.
“My roommates and I thought we should introduce ourselves to the secret service, but when we took three steps toward their black SUV the tinted window rolled down and one of them said, ‘Scott, how can we help you?’”
Then, when Scott decided to move back to Marshfield in 2004, he approached the same black SUV to say good-bye. “They said if it were not for us [and our parties] their job would have been very boring.”
Indeed, Scott does like to keep it fun, which is why he launched The South Shore Experience.
Obviously, as a realtor, he is hoping his area expertise will result in some new clients, but ultimately it is merely an excuse for him to go out and play in the community.
“There is a method to my madness,” Scott says, “but I really don’t know how this will evolve or where it goes from here. I’m just going to go with the flow and be very adaptive.”
